“THE FOUNDER OF A BUSINESS GETS TO A POINT WHERE HIS OR HER PERSONAL GROWTH IS MUCH MORE INVOLVED WITH ALLOWING OTHERS IN THE COMPANY TO GROW, SO THAT THEY CAN GIVE MEANING TO THEIR OWN LIVES.”

— Paul Hawken,

CEO, Smith and Hawken

Remember, few workplace considerations discourage employees more than working with shoddy equipment and obsolete technology. Make an investment in advanced equipment, current technology, and research materials to give employees the tools they need. Buy the best machinery, lease and upgrade computers and software yearly, offer the best business magazines and industry trade publications in the employee lunchroom, and create a library of industry-related and general business books.

When your employees open their own businesses, they’ll need to know how to locate and select vendors, negotiate with them, inspect their products, and demand better service. So it’s important to teach employees how to develop relationships with vendors and to make equipment and supplies purchases. Besides cutting down on your workload, it will also help to educate and motivate your staff.

Be a mentor to your employees. In today’s world, mentoring is a disappearing institution that can nevertheless inspire great loyalty and self-confidence in your employees. The best way to prepare employees is to teach them everything you know. Tell them what steps you took to prepare yourself to be an entrepreneur and continuously offer to support them in their career development. Recount details of your own experience and education: what you studied and learned, where you trained, who you approached for help and how they responded, which other businesses you researched, which books and journals you read, and how you conceived your own business.

While it’s clear that everyone in your company can’t be a leader, you should train your staff in the fundamentals and essentials of leadership. Teach them to inspire those around them with passion and enthusiasm, and how to model hard work and perseverance. Remind them by doing so that the best leaders are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and work with employees. Make sure they understand that leaders need to be the best they can, always trying to improve on the day before. Most important, tell staff members the best way to prepare for a leadership role is to adopt these behaviors today. They’ll be prepared for their futures, whether they’re with you or not.
